A match and a hatch

Our friends Claire and Jeff chose Waitangi Day to wed. Our whole tribe was invited to help celebrate at the Berhampore Bowling Club. Despite the wind, it was a gorgeous day. The wdding ceremony was followed by bowls, or in the kids case, running on the great green expanse of the bowling greens. Dinner for the kids (25 seated around the kids table and this wasn't counting the babes in arms, talk about child-friendly!) was followed by a delicious meal and speeches before Claire's specially prepared CD of eighties music was blasted out over Berhampore. Congratulations Claire and Jeff, we wish you all the best!

Congratulations are also in order for our friends Emma, Emanuele and Marcello who welcomed a new daughter/sister into the world last Tuesday. I know they check in here every now and again so am sure they won't mind proud big brother Marcello and Alice making a guest appearance via a photo nicked from Emanuele's facebook album!

Rimutaka Forest Park

We enjoyed a lovely hot day in the Catchpool Valley, in the Rimutaka Forest Park. We arrived early afternoon and by 4pm, as we were starting to think about lighting the portable BBQ, we had the place to ourselves. The girls enjoyed some "mountain-biking", some tennis, some rugby, a swim in the river and a delicious BBQ.

Welcome Ryan Robert!

Scott, Haidee and Gabriella welcomed Ryan Robert to the world on 19th January. 8 pounds, 4 ounces of very cute wee boy! Well done Haidee.

The railroads get longer and longer and now often traverse the girls' room, the hallway and into the lounge!

The one and only picture we took in Tauranga - Iris and Phoebe enjoying dinner at Ro's restaurant. Despite the lack of pictures, we had a lovely time with Rosaleen and Kate- some nice walks, a good evening with lots of talk and a little too much wine(!) and a great lunch on the Strand.

Fire, fire, fire!

We had a visit from the Porirua Fire Brigade at playgroup this Wednesday. The kids learnt how to "get out, stay out, welldone!" and how to shout "fire, fire, fire" if they spot one. They also got to check out the fire engine and squirt the fire hose.

Although she doesn't look too sure here, Phoebe rang Granmarg that night to tell her all about the exciting morning.

Welcome to November! We've been enjoying(!) the spring weather - some gorgeous calm, sunny days interspersed with some gale force winds and driving rain. Nice! The garden appreciates the rain though...

Josh is very proud of the crop of gorgeous bronze irises that have come up this year.
Duplo continues to be a favourite past time in our house, with the games becoming more and more elaborate. The Duplo figures are gradually being named. So far we have Iris, Phoebe and Arlo and a few other yet to be named fellows. The Duplo family visit farms and houses and also seem to bit a bit naughty as they are often sent to time out or to bed.

Randomness

Once again weeks have slipped by without us posting on this blog. We've been so busy that we haven't even been taking many pictures. Iris has moved to Titahi Bay Kindy and is loving every second. The girls and I go to music and two different play groups each week as well as catching up with friends, hunting for the Wellington region's best playground (still undecided!) and going to the beach. Josh's job is going well and in non-work time he spends time with his girls, rides his bike and potters around the house (he's currently reattaching our shade sail over the deck in preparation for summer).

And let's not forget the baby! Lily is just shy of four months and is a delight, if I may say so myself. She sleeps, eats, smiles, sleeps, eats, babbles, sleeps, eats, smiles etc etc. She's very interested in Iris and Phoebe's antics (getting ready to join in, I'm sure). She happily fits in with the activities already on our busy schedule and has actually been awake at play groups, kindy gym and music for the last few sessions, having blissfully slept through all her previous visits. She's very keen on the idea of sitting but still needs a little help. Not so keen on tummy time - don't tell the Plunket nurse... For the last week, she's been happily sleeping in her own room, having made the transition from bassinet in mum and dad's room to cot in her own room. Think we're all sleeping better now. We just have to convince Phoebe that 6am is TOO EARLY!

Next in line is Phoebe, our big two year old! She loved her animal-themed party and the trike she got ("just like Iris"!) Yet another chatterbox, she talks in complete sentences and makes her thoughts and needs very well known. Frequently used phrases are: "Look at me", "Go away Iris", "I want...", "Me come too" (usually when we drop Iris at kindy) "Cuddle me, Mummy" and "me cuddle Lily". She's growing like a weed and is not that much smaller than Iris (quite an achievement given that Iris' current height is off the top of the Plunket charts).

It's all about Iris

Since we're playing catch up, I'll do a post for each Campbell girl, starting with Little Miss Kindy (aka the "big girl"). Iris is definitely a "kid" now, as opposed to a toddler. She's been going to kindy this term and to say she loves it would be a huge understatement. She never stops talking, meaning life in the Campbell household now has a constant running commentary (with an echo, thanks to Phoebe!) Iris' current favourite things are swimming, "ammals" (animals of any kind), yellow, riding her bike, Duplo, hassling Phoebe, cuddling Lily and stories (reading and listening). Still to come - pictures of Iris' new haircut.

Iris and Phoebe under the amazing quilt Iris got for her birthday from her Great Aunt Maureen. Details you can't see in the photo are the patches of fabric decorated with irises and the nursery rhymes around the edge. This is a firm favourite and gets used daily, on her bed and on the couch for DVDs.

PARTY TIME - IRIS' 3RD BIRTHDAY

Yes, we know it's been more than 2 months since June 20th. Blame blogger for not letting us load pictures easily! The theme of the party was "yellow", chosen by Iris in honour of her favourite colour.

3 weeks and growing!

It's hard to believe that Lily is 3 (nearly 4) weeks old now! As you can probably imagine, it's been a busy time for us. Here's a few snapshots...

Our first outing as a family of 5 was a picnic and checking out the rock pools in Plimmerton - look closely and you'll see Iris, Phoebe and Josh looking for crabs...

Iris' doll, Baby Emma, often mysteriously appears next to Lily. She also freaks Mum out on a regular basis with feet, head or other body parts that look way too similar to the real thing sticking out of places where newborn babies shouldn't be...under the couch, buried in a pile of cushions and so on!

We had a visit from Sarah's cousin Ayron, his wife Ali and their two boys, Samuel (above with Phoebe) and Lucas, on holiday from Perth. It was great to see Ayron (for the first time in 21 years as we figured out!) and meet his family. We hope they enjoyed the rest of their holiday in NZ and hope it's not another 21 years before the next get-together!

The best mother's day present ever!

We welcomed Lily Elena Campbell in to our famly on Sunday 11th May (Mother's day in NZ so very appropriate) at 7.16am. After a straightforward labour, she arrived in a big rush before Josh and Sandy, our midwife, could catch her! Luckily, she landed on the bed and vocally protested the indignity! She weighed in at 3.37 kilos (7.4 pounds) and has all the necessary fingers, toes and other bits. Blue eyes and lots of dark brown hair - definite resemblance to Josh more than Sarah so far. We've been warned to expect jaundice but there are no other issues and she's eating and sleeping like a champ.

Dad is tired but very proud. He started a new job last week so is back to work already, as the projects he's working on are all go, go, go! He's working for Business Porirua (the local Chamber of Commerce) and has a horrendous 2 minute commute;) Means he's close by to have lunch at home or be called on if needed at home.

Iris and Phoebe are very chuffed with their little sister. Iris kindly informs all guests on the right way to hold her and introduces her as Lily Delena. Phoebe calls her "Yiyi" and helpfully points out her "yittle nose" and "yittle hands" and other parts. Our first few days as a family of five have gone very smoothly, thanks to a great deal of help from Granmarg. Lily has been very settled since we got home and Iris and Phoebe have been taking it all in their strides.

Mum is fine - "easy" birth means quick recovery so am quickly feeling more like my real self (soooo relieved to be no longer pregnant!) Looking forward to getting to know this new daughter.

We had almost two weeks away in February and managed to fit in time in Taupo and Napier, as well as a full week at a holiday house in Gisborne. The girls both coped well with long drives and enjoyed beaches, hot pools, seeing family and friends and, of course, ice creams. Highlights included a ride on a steam train, the Morere Hot Springs, Jamie, Finn and Rose's trampoline and having the whole of De Brett's to ourselves for several hours!

Iris overcame her swing phobia while we were away and now we can't keep her off them! Phoebe's always been a swing fiend so now we push them in tandem.

We went for a lovely meal on the 17th Feb (our wedding anniversary - 12th!). This photo was taken at around 7pm - the sun lingered for much longer, making for a fantastic evening topped off with an ice cream on the beach for dessert.

Iris was very taken with the mosaic seat outside the Gisborne museum. It's full of quirky little touches and warranted very close inspection.Iris and Phoebe were beside themselves with excitement when we headed out for a walk and stumbled on a steam train. Even more excitement ensued when we discovered we were just in time for a ride. The train is staffed by volunteers and makes trips on Sunday mornings from Gisborne to Muriwai, a round trip of a couple of hours including a stop for morning tea at Muriwai.

We had some busy days so this was a common sight in the back of our car each afternoon when we headed back to base. This one was taken on the way back from our Tokomaru Bay and Tolaga Bay expedition.

Last stop before we finally made it home to the Bay was the Brown Sugar Cafe in Taihape, where the girls enjoyed special "lunch bags" which came with "coffee" (aka fluffed up milk!). For those of you with young kids, if you're passing through Taihape, the lunch bags were a great idea - vegemite sandwiches, fruit, muesli bars and a little mini pack of chips plus the drink for $5.

Summer highlights

It's been a long, hot and fantastic summer for the Campbell family. Iris is turning into a real entertainer - she loves to sing (never stops!) and provides a running commentary on daily life. SHe is working on counting to twenty, she gets to about thirteen and things get interesting and has a fantastic version of the alphabet ("A,B,C,D,G,S,R...) Phoebe is talking up a storm too. She knows the names for a surprising number of things around the house and is a fantastic mimic. She's currently working on two and three word sentences (daddy go car, cat sleep bed, baby tummy mummy, want some and so on). Her version of "The Wheels on the Bus" is great - "Wheels, bus, up, down!". Josh is in the midst of job interviews and Sarah has been busy painting and "nesting". May 17th suddenly seems very close!

It's become an annual event now - the 4th year we've done this in Titahi Bay. Great turnout this year and a pretty good effort from the weather too. It seems Josh took most of the photos because there are none of the birthday boy!

January was filled with beach and pool expeditions and lots of time with friends.(Why Blogger has decided my text needs to be underlined is beyond me...)

Jacob came nd stayed overnight with us while his parents made a lightning trip up to Napier. Phoebe enjoyed having an extra playmate around the next morning.
Here's our little petrol head - Phoebe LOVES going in the car and cries "CAR" pitieously at the door if one of us goes out without her. If we let her, this is where she'd sit.
At the Tawa pool for Thomas' 5th birthday party. Iris and Phoebe spent the whole time going UP and DOWN this slide. Neither of them was particularly impressed when we dragged them home.

We continued our regular Friday play group over the Christmas/New Year break by having it at our houses, instead of our regular venue of Ngati Toa School. This particular day was a scorcher and we spent all morning on our deck (mums and cups of tea) or back yard (kids and lots of energy).

Campbell child #3 update: we went for a scan yesterday and were pleased to find that all looks good with the in utero Campbell child. Heart, lungs, kidneys, stomach, bladder, spine etc all appear as they should and the baby is right on target for size. We've had lots of people ask if we're "going to find out". To put you out of your misery, yes, we did find out and it's a....

...nother GIRL!!!! Iris would like to name her Dorothy the Dinosuar. Phoebe seems a bit bemused by it all and just pats mum's tummy and says "baby!" Mum and Dad are thrilled to bits she's healthy and can't wait to meet her.

We've been spending lots of time at our beach now that the weather is warmer. The girls have been hooning around on the sand and, in Iris' case, even in the water...

We recently had a family get-together to scatter Alastair's ashes. We started off with lunch at our place, followed by a trip to Wellington's south coast to scatter the ashes (Alastair used to enjoy diving around this area) and afternoon tea at Margaret's house turned into dinner and a very late night for two little girls (and their parents!).

Alastair's brother, Ian, finished off the rocking horse that Alastair had started making for Iris and Phoebe. They delivered "Mac" (aka Guppy) before lunch, much to Phoebe's delight.
The whole fandamily, including Jen, our surprise visitor from Melbourne. For those who are interested or who have bad eyesight;) they are: (standing from left) Josh, Jared, Ian, Linda, Brad, Jen, Sue, Trevor and Audrey and (seated from left) Alan, Margaret, Iris, Sarah and Phoebe.

We stopped at "Better" Bay, the bay next to Worser Bay to visit Josh's grandmother, Norma's, seat. As you can see from the photos, it was a pretty wild day and no one was game to swim where Norma and her fellow OBEs (over bloody eighties) did for so many years.

Winter has finally left the building and we've welcomed in spring with a fantastic crop of irises. Our own Iris is very proud of them and shows everyone the "Irisflowers". Here's a random selection of shots showing what we've been up to lately.Breaking out the summer wardrobe.

Once upon a time in Titahi Bay, there was a dopey digger driver. He drove his truck, with his digger on top, down a very steep bank across the road from the Campbells' house. Little did the dopey digger driver know that the bank was not only steep but very squidgy...His truck, with his digger on top, got stuck in the mud providing hours of entertainment for the residents of the Campbells quiet street. The dopey digger driver tried and tried to back his truck, with his digger on top and his coffee in his hand the whole time, up the bank but only succeeded in getting it more and more stuck.Eventually, the dopey digger driver had to admit defeat and it wasn't long before two cranes drove up the Campbells' street and spent a long time lining up to try and pull the trucker, with the digger on top, out of the mud.

Just before lunch, they finally got the truck, with the digger on top, out of the mud. There was much cheering and jubilation from the residents of the Campbells' street. The dopey digger driver very sensibly decided to drive his truck, with his digger on top and his coffee still in hand, 100 metres up the street and use the brand spanking new concrete driveway to get down the steep bank. The residents of the Campbells' street wondered why he didn't do that in the first place...

As you'll probably know by now, Josh's father, Alastair, died at the end of August. His funeral was held in early September and since then, we've been getting used to life without him around. It's been hard but there have been some fun times as these random photos will show.

Phoebe's first birthday party was brought to you by the letter 'P' - we had p=themed food (pizza, peanuts, pineapple, papaya, pretzels etc), drink (pinot noir, pilsener, pale ale and the all-encompassing "plonk") and games. Guests got into the spirit of things - we were joined by Peter Pan, a Parisienne, a professional, Granmarg resplendent in purple, Briana as a princess, Hayley in pink and so on. Phoebe, of course, came as her self and was the star of the show.

All in all, a good time had! The girls coped really well with the flying and airports and loved having their grandparents around 24/7. Josh and I had a couple of nights out, thanks Granmarg! It was great going with Margaret and Alastair as they have been before and knew the good spots to visit.

There is a fantastic playground, including watery bits, on the Cairns Esplanade. The girls had a wonderful time.

Phoebe's toes got a good clean courtesy of this friendly kangaroo.

Josh and I saw this snake on a walk to the Barron Gorge. Identified by a local as a red-bellied black snake - poisonous and, thankfully, a couple of metres below us and the boardwalk we were on. This was the first live snake either of us had seen in the wild (saw plenty of squashed ones on the highways in the Northern Territory) and was exciting for both us and the hoards of Japanese and German tourists.

We recently spent a week in Cairns with Josh's parents. This was a chance to spend some quality time and soak up some warmth. As most of you will know by now (and apologies for the medium for those of you who don't), Alastair has been diagnosed with stomach cancer and, with his grim prognosis, spending time together as a family is particularly important right now. We managed to pack a fair bit into our week - cuddling koalas, patting kangaroos, handling snakes (Josh only!), good food, lovely weather and a very comfortable beachfront apartment.

A very thick layer of frost greeted us on the morning of our departure - jetting off to a tropical climate was perfectly timed.

A Campbell family friend, Dave Major, came to Brisbane Airport for a brief, in-transit catch-up.

This picture made me think of "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner" - Rohan was running a marathon the day after the party so was a little nervous! We appreciated the effort he made to be there - he'd moved in to a new flat that afternoon and still made it out with a lovely children's story about Salvador Dali for Iris (fantastic book for anyone interested in art, goes nicley with the book on Monet that Jessica gave to Phoebe. With any luck, our children will be kulcha'ed!)

The younger guests took advantage of the winter sun and tried out Iris and Phoebe's new swing set (very kindly given to us by their cousins Madison, Delaney and Brandon, and driven down from Taupo by Stuart and Delaney the day before).

Three of Granmarg's very good friends, Leone, Jessica and Marg L. joined in the festivities. Bubbles and balloons are a good mix.

Still a full house - Sue ( in the pink shirt) and, in the Play-Doh corner Ashleigh, Olivia, Brianna, Hayley and Crystal.

We were lucky to have a gorgeous, if a bit chilly, day for Iris' birthday party and had a HUGE turnout. As far as we could tell, every enjoyed themselves and no-one weny away hungry after the fondue!

Granmarg and her good friend, Leone (who came all the way from Auckland) helped Iris with the business of opening and cataloguing the lovely gifts she received.

Back by popular demand!

There are several posts here with photos going back to May. (UPDATE: Have had a few issues with Blogger - other posts will be redone tonight, 2/7). It's been a busy few months for various reasons and blogging has had to take a back seat. Now that we've played catch up, look out for photos of our upcoming holiday with Margaret and Alastair in Cairns.

Alastair has donated his groovy bathcouch for our backyard. We're looking forward to summer so we can pull out the specially-made cushions and enjoy lounging in this sunny spot.

We had a visit from Nicola and gorgeous wee Rose, on a flying visit from London for Nicola's brother's wedding. We're looking forward to spending time with the whole family (Giles, Jamie and Finn stayed in London this time) when they move back to NZ later in the year.

We were privileged to be able to share in celebrating Sarah's Aunt Rosaleen's 60th birthday with hoards of her family and friends. It was lovely to introduce to Iris and Phoebe to their great aunts and uncles (all their great aunts were there and only one great uncle couldn't make it) and to catch up with cousins and their offspring. Rosaleen, we had a great time - thanks for inviting us and we'll see you in Wellington next time you're down (we'll be expecting outrageous purple and red outfits).

Rimutaka Rail Trail

We walked to the summit of the Rimutaka Rail Trail from the Kaitoke side - a loooong, slooow incline. Took us a while to make it there and back but we enjoyed the lovely bush and river views and Iris thought the tunnel we walked through was pretty cool.

We headed out top Raumati South just after Christmas for lunch and a trip to the playground with Shirley, Heath, Briana and Hayley.

Iris and Hayley travelled in style.Playing on trucks is accompanied by a brrrm, brrrm soundtrack.

We have enjoyed a few sunny days between the rainy ones...

We've discovered that Iris is a bit of a chip fiend. Here she is polishing off a bowl of lemon pepper wedges (which were very spicy!) and demonstrating the art of dipping.

It seems an age ago now but here's a selection of Christmas Day pics. We had a lovely day with Grandmarg and Grandad, Kate and Amelia. Iris was in heaven - each new present was greeted with an "oooooh!" and she very kindly helped out Phoebe with the unwrapping. A big thanks to those who sent gifts and cards - very much appreciated.Scott and Haidee came by Christmas morning with very cool hand puppets (Tom the Tiger, Harry the Hippo - now we just need Dick the dog so we'll have Tom, Dick and Harry!)

We recently had the honour of a visit from Sarah's cousins Emily and Libby and Libby's son Frank. It was the first time Emily had met Phoebe - when we stayed with her in Napier in July, Phoebe was a very visible bump being lugger around by Sarah!Definitely related - from an extended family of readers!
Frank is crawling and is now working hard on walking - watch out Libby and Dougal!

Frank, the tool man, got very excited when Josh and Alastair got out the tool box to do manly tool-wielding things on the deck.

Kathrine's birthday party

We helped our friend Kathrine celebrate her birthday recently. Her very small one bedroom flat was full to bursting with adults, children, babies, food and lethally strong Bacardi-based cocktails. We liked her idea of asking for donations for a local foodbank instead of gifts - initially we thought it showed her generous giving nature but realised it was so she could take the huge boxes of stuff her self and look really good! Either way, hopefully it helps out some families at Christmas.

Another Catherine (not sure how she spells it), seated next to Phoebe and I, had left her 18month old son, Bruno, but had a wonderful time playing with Iris and Phoebe and entertaining Thomas and Lucas, the "big" (i.e. 3 and 5 yr olds) boys in attendance.Iris was quite taken with this wee fella (whose name has gone right out of my head!)

The Campbell girls visited an indoor playground with Libby and Frank last week. Iris and Frank had a lovely time in the rather scary looking caterpillar/tunnel you can see below, as well as with the cars, balls and slides. Phoebe had a good old kick in the floor, protected from the big kids by a picket fence (until one of said big kids nicked off with it!) More Phoebe photos on their way soon...

Granmarg and Grandad came out for afternoon tea and stayed for an impromptu BBQ yesterday. The bath and bedtime routine was ably taken over by Granmarg, with Mum only stepping in for the last story...

Iris has reached the grand old age of 17 months. Words are coming thick and fast and her favourites include: duck (anthing with wings, although she has said bird a couple of times now), shoe (surprise, surprise), door (all doors MUST be closed!) , dog and cat. Car is code for "I'd like to go out now".

3 months

Time flies when you're having fun - Phoebe Rose is now three months old. She weighs in at a healthy 6.44 kilos and is 61 cm long/tall! Obviously we're biased but she just gets cuter every day!

Fireworks and family

We braved the crowds on Guy Fawkes night to check the Wellington fireworks display. Iris was bundled up in the backpack, Phoebe in the frontpack and off we went. After a few seconds of uncertainty, Iris decided the fireworks were really cool. Phoebe was mesmerised from the start and neither of them seemed phased by the loud bangs or the crowds of people.
The following day, we headed back into town to catch up with Marie and Eileen, Sarah's aunts and Iris and Phoebe's great [fantastic!] aunts. Iris had a wonderful time walking from Civic Square to Cuba Mall, despite having to be dragged out of the shoe shop. We spent a pleasant afternoon in Murphy's Bar, having a good old catch up

Last weekend was a busy one, with two birthday parties to attend. Iris was in her element and lapped up all the attention. Phoebe slept through much of both parties but managed to charm a few more people when she was awake.

We had a family afternoon tea with Granmarg and Grandad so we could give Grandmarg her birthday presents on the day of her (21st!) birthday. Phoebe chatted with Grandad while Iris read Granmarg stories.

Granmarg's mystery birthday party was on Sunday. She's kept us all in suspense for months, only telling us the date and time. All was revealed when we arrived at the Time Cinema in Melrose. It's in the garage of a film buff's house and, as well as a 30 seat cinema, John also has a huge collection of movie memorabilia, pinball machines and other miscellaneous stuff (lucky he's got a big garage!). We were treated to a selection of films chosen by Margaret, including some great stuff from the New Zealand Film Unit and some great, very un-PC cartoons. Amanda came through yet again with a fantastic cake - 0ne way we could surprise Margaret!

The cake was adorned with the Arc de Triomphe (due to Margaret's love of Paris) and the words "What a triomphe!" The age was a bit blurred - I think it said 40...

Labouring away

We hit the road over Labour Weekend and visited Josh's rellies at their farm in Rongotea (aunt Audrey, uncle Ian and cousin Hamish) and Sarah's brother Greg and his family at Turakina, near Wanganui. Both girls lapped up the attention and it was great to catch up with family. Sarah and the girls also spent time catching up with Sarah's aunt, Rosaleen, who was down from Tauranga (minus camera so unfortunately no photos). Iris had a wonderful time and we think Phoebe's made another admirer!

On a more general note, Iris is talking more and more. Her repertoire includes "cat", "dog", "duck" (she's obsessed with them!), "shoe", "sock", "foot" and "toe". Scarily, I think she also attempted "TV"! "Mummy" and "Daddy" are now used in context which is quite a buzz for us both. Phoebe continues to grow and grow! You can't stop her smiling and she's also a very chatty wee thing (trying to outdo Iris already).

We survived the polar blast that hit Wellington last week. We had a lovely day with Frank and Libby on Wednesday (had so much fun I forgot to take photos!) Jude and Ella came to play on Friday. The good weather finally arrived today so we headed up the coast to Queen Elizabeth Park at Paekakariki for a picnic and a walk on the beach. Iris loved the waves and enjoyed walking on the sand, chasing her shadow. Phoebe is doing really well and seems to be totally recovered from her nasty bug. The Plunket Nurse visited for the first time - Phoebe charmed her with big grins and coos. Iris absorbed in a good book on a rainy day.

Since her stay in hospital, Phoebe is doing much better. She's back to smiling at the drop of a hat and is very chatty. She loves watching her big sister and all signs are that she is one sociable little girl!

Wellington put on such a great day for Sarah's birthday that we headed off to the Botanic Garden for a picnic at the Soundshell. The tulips were out in all their glory. Our plans to feed the ducks were foiled - the very well-fed ducks were not interested, as evidenced by the mounds of uneaten bread in the duck pond! Josh and his girls.

We celebrated Sarah's birthday and Phoebe's arrival on Saturday 16th September. Our little house was bursting at the seams with friends and family, not to mention food and drink! A good time was had by all (so they tell us!). Amanda outdid herself with the fantastic birthday cake - thanks again! Iris with Sarah's workmates, Audrey and Nicola.

Just a quick update to explain our silence on the blog front. Phoebe has spent the last four days in Ward 19 at Wellington Hospital after a visit to the GP on Friday (for a slight temperature and general "not quite rightness") turned into a ride in the ambulance, a trip to the Emergency Department and treatment and observation in the ward. She was discharged this morning after being given the all clear by the doctors. It seems she has had a nasty infection, probably viral. All the tests done so far have come back negative. They narrowed it down to a particular group of viruses, the test results for which will not be back for a week or so. The doctors are happy that whatever she did have has cleared up. After being a very sick little girl on Friday and being subjected to needles, lumbar punctures and lots of poking and prodding, she started to improve on Saturday and markedly improved on Sunday. She was given antibiotics until Monday to cover the spectrum of possible infections and once the antibiotics were stopped, kept in for a further 24 hours of observation. She was looked after very well by the doctors and nurses in the children's ward (as was Mum!) and is now pretty much back to her normal self. She has been beaming and cooing this morning and is obviously much happier. Josh and I are very grateful for our wonderful GP's prompt action (it was scary how fast Phoebe went downhill) and for the GP's receptionist who entertained Iris for the 20 minutes between Mum and Phoebe being whisked off in the ambulance and Dad arriving from work. Thanks also to the family and friends who've provided cups of tea, quiet bedrooms for Iris' portacot so she could have her usual sleep, magazines and food for Sarah and moral support.

In the midst of all the drama on Friday, Iris decided not to be outdone and chose that day to start walking. She spent the afternoon with Grandmarg in Ngaio and when Grandad arrived home, she was happily walking up and down their hallway, something she continued to do until Josh arrived to pick her up later in the day. She's now taken off (even tried running a few times) and is a seasoned pro.

I'm hoping to get some photos up here (from my birthday party and some other miscellaneous ones) this weekend.

The big sister's turn

Iris just gets bigger and learns something new everyday. She can point to different parts of her body - nose, ears, feet, tummy. She loves to dance and sings herself little songs when we're in the car. She tries to share her toys (and her snacks) with Phoebe. She is very proud of "Bee" and points her out to everyone she meets. She absolutely LOVES books and will happily sit in a huge pile of them, "reading".

For those of you in Wellington, a reminder that we're having a party on Saturday to celebrate Phoebe's birth (15/8/06) and Sarah's birthday (17/9/75). Mid-afternoon kick-off, potluck dinner. Call or email for address details and directions if you need them. No need to RSVP.

We know it's spring because our cherry tree tells us it is! We've been enjoying the warmer weather and longer days. Phoebe continues to do well - she weighed in at 4.1kgs (9 pounds) on Tuesday at her four week check and is charming everyone with her smile. Sandy, our midwife, was very impressed at how strong she is. Phoebe's even letting us sleep for four hour stretches most nights. When she's awake, she's very alert and intrigued by everything around her. She's even pretty tolerant of Iris' sometimes boisterous attentions!

We spent a lovely few hours at the Wellington Brewery, trying the new Espresso Porter (Mum and Dad only!). Iris had a great time and Phoebe seemed to enjoy her first visit to a pub.

Iris is adjusting well to being a big sister. We've found the trick to be keeping her occupied and active. She loves racing up and down the deck on her scooter and we've been going to a couple of playgroups in Titahi Bay. We went to the zoo last week - she loved the lions and the kookaburra.

After keeping us waiting...and waiting...Phoebe Rose Campbell finally made her entrance into the world on Tuesday 15th August at 7.16pm at Kenepuru Hospital in Porirua. She weighed in at a healthy 3.46 kilos (or 7 pounds, 6 ounces in the old speak). Everything went so smoothly that we went home 3 hours later. Since then, Phoebe has been sleeping and eating like a trooper and treating us to the odd period of alertness.

We spent the first week of May staying in Whitianga and exploring the Coromadel Peninsula. Despite heavy rain warnings and flooding in parts of the peninsula, we enjoyed great weather and had a wonderful, relaxing time. Iris enjoyed the Driving Creek Railway, had a great time at Hot Water Beach and enjoyed playing in the sand at Lonely Bay, near Cooks Beach.

March/April 2006

We took Iris to the zoo for the first time in March. She loved the zebras and the giraffes, but slept through the lions and cheetahs! We also had a visit from Iris' great grandmother, Rana, in April. It was Rana's first visit to Wellington for many years so we enjoyed driving her around her old haunts around Miramar and Seatoun, as well as spending time at our place so she could get to know Iris.

We set this blog up way back in January as a way of sharing photos with family and friends in distant corners of the globe. We've been a bit slack at actually (a) telling people it exists and (b) posting photos! We're now in a position to spend a bit more time on this and intend to post photos on a regular basis.
